About 150 metres from the island of Formentera, the small island of s’Espalmador hides shyly within the Ses Salines Natural Park of Ibiza and Formentera.
Less than 3 kilometres long and barely 800 metres wide, you can cover the island in approximately two hours.
Although you won’t find any buildings, beach bars or facilities of any kind here, the island of s’Espalmador will certainly captivate you.
At present, the only buildings you will find on this uninhabited island are two Ibizan-style constructions, a small chapel, a lighthouse and Sa Guardiola, a two-storey watchtower located on the highest point of the island. It was probably built to protect the island from pirate raids.
It is worthwhile to walk around the whole island and to also discover the small islets that surround it. These are the Illa de Castelví, the Illa de sa Torreta, the Illa de s’Alga and the Illa des Porcs.
Let yourself be carried away by nature in its purest state and contemplate impressive landscapes, from cliffs that will take you to the end of the world to white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Welcome to s’Espalmador, our little paradise.
Beaches on the island of Espalmador
The coast of Espalmador is made up of gentle cliffs and three unspoilt beaches of spectacular beauty. The beach of Es Raó de S’Alga, located to the west of the island, is one of the most popular amongst tourists. It is crescent-shaped and has fine, almost pristine white sand. We recommend that you do not miss out on the beaches of Sa Torreta and Cala Bosch.
All the beaches on the island are characterised by their sandy bottoms and calm waters that are impossible to resist.
An island with great biological diversity
Espalmador is characterised by its great biodiversity. In its interior there is a lagoon, Bassa de s’Espalmador, which is the habitat of numerous marine birds, such as the stilt, the common shelduck and the kentish plover.
Many visitors used to come to the lagoon to cover themselves with mud because they believed it had curative properties. However, the area has been declared inaccessible for some time now.
Despite the prohibitions and the fact that it is stagnant water with a high proliferation of bacteria, this lagoon is still regularly frequented by tourists who come with the unique desire of having a good mud bath.
How to get to the island of S’Espalmador
Despite its proximity to the northern end of the beach of Ses Illetes or Es Trucadors, in Formentera, the island of Espalmador is no longer accessible on foot.
The most common and cheapest way to reach the island of Espalmador is to take a boat from the port of La Savina. It leaves several times a day and makes a brief stop at Illetes beach. If you wish, you can also rent a private boat and go at your own pace. This will give you an exclusive and personal getaway. If that’s the case, you should know that the northwest area of the island is protected by the island of Sa Torreta, the best area for boats.
