Santa Gertrudis, an inland village

Santa Gertrudis is a small inland village located in the centre of Ibiza that in recent years has become a mandatory stop for all visitors of Ibiza.

The village has grown up around a whitewashed church, which dates back to the 18th century and is located in the main square, next to many cafés, restaurants and shops.

Santa Gertrudis is surrounded by an agricultural landscape with orchards and fields of fruit trees, and where it is not uncommon to see sheep and goats up close, as well as the only dairy cows you will find on the island.

Today, this small, whitewashed village frequented by artists, has a multicultural, fresh and lively atmosphere all year round.

What to do in Santa Gertrudis

Santa Gertrudis offers a different and bohemian lifestyle that has attracted many artists, craftsmen, musicians and sculptors who have settled here over the years.

Santa Gertrudis is a good place to enjoy the peace and quiet. The town has become a renowned gastronomic centre, where you can enjoy pasta dishes, sandwiches, tapas and vegetarian options, among many others. Despite being a small town, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from in the main square of the town. They are perfect for enjoying a quiet dinner, free of noise and loud voices, while the children run around in the pedestrian streets of the surrounding area.

Don’t miss Bar Costa, the most traditional bar in the area, famous for its Serrano ham sandwiches and where many of the artists exhibit their work.

During the afternoon and especially at night, the streets of the town fill up with a lively atmosphere. This is the time to browse the small boutiques and craft shops, and to take an evening stroll through its streets.

The Church of Santa Gertrudis

The town of Santa Gertrudis has been growing around its church, especially since the 1990s. In the past, it was an agricultural town surrounded by farmland. Gradually, several blocks of flats have been built which have considerably increased the population of the municipality.

The church was built in the 18th century and stands out for its grey and yellow stripes on the whitewashed walls. The square in which it stands has been converted into a completely pedestrianized promenade.

Next to the church is the cemetery and between the two stands a bronze sculpture representing the first bishop of Ibiza, the work of a well-known Ibizan artist.

Although it may seem that there is little to do in this town, it is well worth a visit for its bohemian atmosphere, its calm or, perhaps, its magnificent setting. Get ready to discover the true essence of Ibiza’s most rural side.
