What to do in Sant Francesc Xavier?

The daily activity in Sant Francesc Xavier revolves around its main square, Plaça de la Constitució, where the Town Hall and the parish church of Sant Francesc Xavier are located.

This parish church, with a sober appearance, was built in the 18th century and was erected as a fortress to protect the town from corsair attacks. Its thick walls and iron-plated gate stand out. Next to the church, which was declared a site of cultural interest in 1996, there is a small cemetery known as Fossar Vell, restored by the architect Marià Castelló, which can also be visited in the mornings.

Opposite the church you can see the Town Hall or Casa Consistorial, a beautiful white building that is well worth a visit.

In Sant Francesc Xavier you will also find the oldest chapel on the island, built in 1336 and known as Sa Tanca Vella. It is a simple, austere, single-storey building that, according to legend, is full of tunnels and secret passages that connect it with the cave of San Valero, in Es Torrent s’Alga, one of the most surprising places on the island. Nowadays, although it is not used as a church, the building has been restored and can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday mornings. Other points of interest in the capital of Formentera are the Ethnographic Museum, with a permanent exhibition of ancient clothing, tools and utensils; and the Town Hall exhibition room, which has free admission.
