Fields of almond and carob trees, whitewashed houses and plenty of peace and quiet is what you will find in San Carlos de Peralta, located just 5 kilometres from Santa Eulalia des Riu, in Ibiza. It is a small, pretty and welcoming village that is definitely worth a visit.
Life in this village in the northeast of Ibiza, where time seems to have stood still, revolves around its whitewashed church, built in 1785. San Carlos is the ideal place to escape from the island’s tourist centres which are full of atmosphere but always crowded.
What to do in San Carlos de Peralta?
During the 1960s, San Carlos de Peralta witnessed the settlement of various hippy communities and has always been a meeting point for intellectuals who have given rise to a cosmopolitan, diverse atmosphere with intense cultural activity.
As well as being home to two of the best-known hippy markets in Ibiza, San Carlos de Peralta has numerous places of interest that you should not miss. It is well worth taking a stroll through the village and discovering its streets full of whitewashed houses, its bars and restaurants, its traditional farmhouses and its charming shops.
One of the most emblematic is the bar Ca Anita or, as it is popularly known, Ca n’Anneta, a traditional meeting point for hippies and intellectuals and, nowadays, well known for its Ibizan herbs.
In the village you can’t miss the church surrounded by gardens, nor its peculiar bell tower, offset to the left; the Font de Peralta, a 17th century stone fountain; or the Trull de Ca n’Andreu Museum, a traditional Ibizan house that houses an 18th century oil mill.
The market of Las Dalias
At the time that the hippie markets were born, their aim was to allow local artists to sell their handmade creations.
On the outskirts of San Carlos de Peralta, in a privileged setting, you will find the best-known hippy market in Ibiza, the Las Dalias market.
In its more than 100 stalls you will find typical Ibizan fashion and handmade jewellery, among many other things.
This market is open all year round, generally from 10 am onwards, but during the summer months you can also shop until 1 am on Saturdays, Mondays and Tuesdays. It is quite common to see live music performances or shows where fire is the main protagonist.
The Punta Arabí market
This market is another of the most popular in Ibiza. It is held on Wednesdays from 10 am to 6 pm in Es Canar and, as well as being the largest and oldest market in Ibiza, it has become a real tourist attraction for all those who visit the island.
Here you will find more than 500 stalls selling fashion, handicrafts, natural cosmetics, antiques, gastronomy and even musical instruments.
The truth is that this market is unique. It is divided into different areas, with spaces where workshops for children, live demonstrations by artists and craftsmen, concerts and many other activities take place. In short, San Carlos de Peralta is a good place to lose yourself and enjoy the peace and quiet. Are you coming to check it out?
