The islet of Es Vedrà is one of the most special spots on the island of Ibiza. It is located two kilometres in front of Cala d’Hort, in Sant Josep de Sa Talaia. Together with the islets of Es Vedranell and Es Illots de Ponent they form part of the Parc de Cala d’Hort i Es Vedrà and, given their high ecological value, they are protected as a biosphere reserve.
This enormous limestone pyramid, almost 400 metres high, is always enveloped in an aura of magic and mysticism that leaves no one indifferent. It is said to be the third magnetic centre of the earth, after the North Pole and the Bermuda Triangle, and it gives off great energy.
In fact, for many it has become one of the best places in Ibiza for spiritual practices, such as yoga or meditation.
Es Vedrà, without a doubt, is a special spot that even served as inspiration for the film South Pacific, becoming the imaginary volcanic island of Bali Hai.
Today, we’ll share with you some curious stories and tales about Es Vedrà. Come and join us!
The legend of the “witch stone”
Legend has it that anyone who touches the stone on the islet will receive a great deal of sexual energy that will transform their life forever. Is it true?
As a result of this belief, many couples decide to take a boat to Es Vedrà with the aim of touching the rock and improving their intimate life.
The only drawback is that the island cannot be visited and it is only possible to disembark with a special permit. You can contemplate its beauty from the boat or from any of the viewpoints in the surrounding area.
The legend of the “triangle of silence”
You’ve probably heard of the Bermuda Triangle, a well-defined area that embodies one of the most disturbing mysteries.
In this case, we can speak of the “triangle of silence”, with the islet of Es Vedrà in Ibiza, the Ifach rock in Calpe (Alicante) and the southwest coast of Mallorca.
Legend has it that, similar to the Bermuda Triangle, ships, machines and navigation systems suffered some inexplicable interferences and failures.
The legend of the lost city of Atlantis
This is another of Es Vedrà’s most famous stories. Many claim that the islet is the tip of the lost city of Atlantis.
Very close to Es Vedrà is the sandstone quarry of Sa Pedrera, known as Atlantis. This was the name given to it by the hippies who had recently arrived in Ibiza in the 1960s and who lived in a natural cave.
The truth is that the islet of Es Vedrà has been involved in many stories, myths and tales since ancient times.
It is also said to have been the home of the nymphs and mermaids who tried to seduce Ulysses in Homer’s Odyssey, and to be the birthplace of the goddess Tanit, whose statue you will find all over the island. Many claim that it is also a place of UFO sightings and strange phenomena… There is even talk of an alien base under the sea!
Some sailors and fishermen from the area have claimed to see large shadows of unknown marine animals under their boats, as well as strange lights and noises.
While these stories may have little truth to them, it’s definitely true that you can feel the magic, peace and calm that this geographical gem gives off.
Many believe its energy is magical, inspirational and healing. True or not, just in case… Make a wish!
